Wellow Dyke Survey
In 2020, York Archaeology partnered with the Wellow Schoolroom group to investigate George Dyke, a triangular earthwork around the village. Learn more about our work on the Wellow Dyke Survey
We carried out a walkover survey (walking across the site to record features) and a condition survey to check the state of the earthwork. Volunteers helped us record detailed site profiles using a total station and GPS.
The project continued in 2022 with an auger survey, where we took small soil samples. This helped us understand which parts of Wellow Dyke were natural and which were man-made.
Volunteers learned every step of the project and gained hands-on experience in archaeology. Their work improved knowledge of the site and created a strong foundation for future investigations by local schools and community volunteers. The project also encouraged volunteers to take pride in George Dyke and support its long-term care.
