Volunteering with York Archaeology
Volunteers play a crucial role at every level of our work, taking on a variety of tasks. Whether you’re engaging the public at our attractions and events or assisting with our collections, archives, and fieldwork teams, volunteers help us connect visitors with over 2,000 years of history. They also support our efforts to preserve and provide access to the collections and archaeology we oversee.
You don’t need previous archaeological or heritage experience to volunteer with us. We welcome anyone eager to help us preserve and promote access to the archaeology and heritage in our care. We welcome volunteers aged 18 and above from all backgrounds. If you’re under 18 and want to get involved, check out our school placement opportunities in the placement section.

Placements and Work Experience with York Archaeology
Our placements provide an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting focused work experience in a heritage or archaeological setting, whether you’re a student or considering a career change.
Designed to last around 10 days over two to three weeks, our placements fit university courses that require a longer-term commitment. Please check with your course leader or supervisor to see if they have any pre-existing arrangements with us. If you need a more flexible experience over a longer period, consider our volunteer roles, which offer various ways to gain experience. You can find out more about these here.
Our placements are open to anyone aged 18 or above. If you’re under 18 and seeking school work experience, we offer a York-based work experience placement in our attractions through a partnership with North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP). You can find out more about these by visiting our attractions placement page.
We currently cannot offer York-based work experience or placements to those under 18 outside our attractions. We will share more information about work experience opportunities for those under 18 in Sheffield and Nottingham soon.
